The objective of this study was to obtain a mathematical model more suitable to estimate the leaf
area of Sangiovese variety. About 80 leaves, of different sizes in the canopy were randomly collected and
measured with a graduated ruler. The lengths of the central vein (CV), the right lateral vein (RLV) and left
lateral vein (LLV) were measured. The real leaf area was measured with a portable leaf area analyzer.
Mathematical models were estimated by the ratio between leaf area and the mean central vein (CV) length and,
the square of central vein length (CV2), the sum of lateral veins length (ΣLV) and the mean square of lateral
veins length ( x LV2). Statistical analysis was performed using regression analysis. The mathematical models
that estimate more precisely the leaf area (LA) use the central vein length (CV) or the sum of lateral veins
length (ΣLV) in a linear equation (LA = 2124.82CV - 9553.98, R2 = 0.91; CV(%) = 16.24 and LA = 1253.4
ΣLV - 9973, R2 = 0.93, CV(%) = 14.74, respectively). Both models showed a significance level of 95% (α =
0.95) and high correlation (R2> 0.90). Estimating leaf area can be performed non-destructively using the
mathematical models. |
